Guanacaste, Costa Rica — GUANACASTE, Costa Rica – In a significant move to enhance preventative healthcare in rural communities, a recent mobile mammogram campaign in Guanacaste has provided vital screenings for over one hundred women, directly addressing public health waitlists and improving access to early cancer detection services.
The initiative, led by Reserva Conchal, the hospitality division of Florida Ice and Farm Company (FIFCO), successfully deployed a mobile mammography unit for two days near the Brasilito Public Force station. This strategic public-private partnership with the Costa Rican Social Security Fund (CCSS) resulted in 104 mammograms being performed for women in the Santa Cruz canton, a region where access to specialized medical equipment can be a significant challenge.
The collaboration proved highly effective. Of the total examinations, 85 were for residents of the Brasilito and Matapalo EBAIS (Basic Teams for Comprehensive Health Care), while the remaining 19 were provided to Reserva Conchal employees over the age of 40. The partnership was crucial for maximizing the campaign’s reach and efficiency.
Coordination was managed by Dr. Johnny Ruiz, the Health First Level of Care Coordinator for Santa Cruz. Dr. Ruiz and his team were instrumental in handling patient scheduling and outreach, a process that not only filled the mobile unit’s capacity but also allowed for the allocation of additional slots, making a tangible dent in the public system’s waiting lists for this critical diagnostic test.
These types of actions reflect the power of collaboration between the public and private sectors.
Gabriela Meza, Sustainability Manager of Reserva Conchal
This campaign is part of a larger, sustained effort by the company. It builds upon a similar event held in May, dubbed “Me Cuido por Mí” (“I Take Care of Myself for Me”), where 40 additional mammograms were conducted at the resort. The company’s commitment to oncological prevention began in 2023 and was significantly amplified in 2024 with the acquisition of the dedicated mobile mammogram unit, designed to bring care directly to its neighboring communities.
To date, these combined efforts have benefited a total of 238 women, underscoring a long-term strategic commitment to community well-being. This aligns with FIFCO’s corporate philosophy of “expansive sustainability,” which aims to foster equity and ensure access to essential services for the communities in which it operates.
Health is one of our pillars. Investing in prevention saves lives and strengthens the social fabric.
