Some 30,000 schoolchildren were left without a scholarship this year because the National Scholarship Fund (Fonabe by its initials in Spanish) ran out of funds. These scholarships are intended for students from poor families. The Fonabe manages about 150,000 scholarships at present.

The amount of the awards is ¢9000 monthly, and in some cases this amount is given only at the beginning of the school year for the purchase of school supplies.
