Proposal for same-sex couples’ unions modified

Posted 12-03-2008 at 11:12 AM by emmanuelgr
The Costa Rican lawmakers who are pushing the bill to legalize unions between homosexual couples filed a new law proposal.

The lawmaker from the Unidad Social Cristiana, Social Christian Unity Party (Pusc by its initials in Spanish), Ana Helena Chacon, said that the new plan no longer speaks of “Civil union,” but rather speaks of “associations living together” as a measure to avoid any resemblance to civilian marriage contracts.

The proposal seeks to facilitate access to rights as a couple for people of the same sex who are living together as such.

The idea is for societies to be established that may acquire rights and duties based on their living together.

Chacon said she is waiting for the Executive Branch to convene the project for the special sessions ending April 30 of next year.

The replacement text was also introduced by the lawmaker from the Frente Amplio (Ample Front Party,) Jose Merino, and the libertarian Carlos Gutierrez.

In addition, they were accompanied by the activist and gay and “transgender” representative, Abelardo Araya of Costa Rica.

The plan, which has the support of Health Minister Maria Luisa Avila, is meeting resistance from conservative and religious sectors.

But as we have said in TicosLand.com, this is the possibility of guaranteeing right to a group of people in Costa Rica. People always think based on beliefs, but what would people say if everyone were equally lost the possibility of social security or from enjoyment of the social and economic benefits to which he should be entitled by being the partner of another person. We are sure that the aforementioned will bring inconvenience and disagreements. The project aims to provide such assurances.
