The Supreme Electoral Tribunal (TSE by its initials in Spanish) delivered the "Building Democracy: Promoting voter participation" prize yesterday to the weekly paper El Financiero, in recognition of its coverage of the referendum on the CAFTA conducted on October 7 last year.
The electoral institution recognized the journalistic El Financiero team for a series of seven special reports on the topic and stressed upon the possibilities that the medium offered to the users of its website to download video, audio and photographs.
The television prize was also awarded in the category of the television program to Cuenta Regresiva, Channel 13, produced by journalist Gabriela Ugarte. "We are very pleased by the award. It is the recognition of our job on an electoral exercise. It was novel and controversial and generated many challenges and much internal debate, "said Jose David Guevara, chief editor of El Financiero.
The Supreme Electoral Tribunal also handed an "honourable mention" to photographer Guillermo Solano, from the Ministry of Public Security, for a picture that he provided the daily newspaper Al Día which it published on the cover of October 6, the day prior to the referendum.
The jury was composed of the journalist Vilma Ibarra, lawyer Carlos Vargas Pagan and academicians Jorge Vargas Cullell, Constantino Urcuyo Thompson and Jose Jimenez.
