President Arias Poverty foresees increased poverty this year

President Oscar Arias said that it is very possible that poverty will increase this year. Arias made this assertion in a radio program known as Our Voice (Nuestra Voz) on Radio Monumental. The reason given as substantiation for this is the increase in food prices, and he added that the same thing will happen in the rest of Latin America.

He also said he felt very happy to be able to have reduced poverty last year, but that given the circumstances it would not be the same this year....

More men choose sterilization

The records of public hospitals in Costa Rica show that in recent years the demand for the operation known as a vasectomy, which aims to sterilize the man by cutting off channels that allow the sperm to reach the semen, has gone up. The number increased by 1079%.

While in 2000 only 105 men had a vasectomy, in 2007 there were 1238 in total. Each year, 1231 men between the ages of 25 to 44 are operated, according to the Costa Rican Social Security Fund (CCSS by its initials in Spanish)....

Green Macaw population is increasing in Costa Rica

This is very good news for all those environmental advocates and bird lovers. The scientist, Javier Chassot, of the Tropical Science Center (CCT by its initials in Spanish) who has been studying green macaws (Ara Ambiguus), considered endangered, for 15 years, announced the news that the population of these birds is growing in Costa Rica .

According to the project that is studying these birds in the northern zone of the country, in 1994 there had been about 200 individuals detected....

Costa Rica tops list of democracies in the region

The annual report of the index for Democratic Development in Latin America, IDD-Lat 2008, announced that Costa Rica is in first place this time around. This is a private study done by Polilat.com and the Konrad Adenauer Foundation and was released in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

The report is an analysis of the behavior of corporations, their leaders and democratic institutions from 18 countries being studied. This time Costa Rica is followed by Chile and Uruguay. While Venezuela, Bolivia...
