In Costa Rica, some universities apply community services as a requirement for graduation. It is under this scheme that psychology and social work students are carrying out their community work in high schools.
The initiative is by fostered by the Youth Action Foundation, benefiting 1186 high school students. The university students must spend 150 hours in community service, and it is students how are on scholarship from the Venture program of the Ministry of Public Education who benefit.
Topics such as sexuality, self-esteem, personal development, vocational guidance and many others are handled. In turn, the students who have received assistance are tracked to try to keep them in the educational system.
It currently covers 14 schools in two Costa Rican provinces, specifically 12 schools in San Jose and 2 in Guanacaste. The Foundation noted that there could be more high schools and provinces next year.
The activities range from organizing lectures to games with which they can teach. Last week at the Monsignor Ruben Odio High School in Desamparados, two psychology students from the Central American University of Social Sciences made a game for handling the topic of sexuality.
The students were supervised by psychologist Ana Dily Gonzalez, project officer from the foundation that fosters this community work.
These workshops are done every two weeks in schools and last 1 hour and 20 minutes. Such actions in Costa Rica create the possibility for university students to develop some kind of social work before entering the job market.
The main objective is to generate awareness that much can be done to help society at large and that although they may not be directly employed in projects of this nature in the future, they can do something to help.
At TicosLand.com, we congratulate the private universities that have driven this initiative and the people who have been doing this for many years. We hope this will continue in those how have not yet dared to incorporate it into their curriculum.
