“Three, two, one ... Lights!” shouted a chorus of dozens of children and adults during the countdown that culminated in the lighting of the National Children’s Museum in San Jose, Costa Rica.
At 7:21 p. m., 8,000 white light bulbs, 1,000 more than those used last year, were lit to adorn and lend a Christmas air to the “castle” and the two towers of the former Central Penitentiary.
“I'm happy. I really like the lights. It is already Christmas,” said the young girl, Alejandra Morales, a neighbor of Desamparados who is three years old.
The activity at the Children's Museum has nine years of tradition and usually marks the start of the Christmas celebrations and the illuminations around San Jose.
The show brought dozens of families together who, despite the weather, enjoyed a “warm” night on the first day of December.
The function began at 6:15 p. m. with a procession of actors who left from the end of 4th to go to the main entrance of the museum.
That is how the Magi opened the way for Mary and Joseph among the crowd, while the group SonSax delighted everyone with their music in the capital of Costa Rica.
Then, 35 young ones from the Children's Choir at the Bansbach Academy of Music, who were dressed in red and green coats, filled the place with Christmas spirit singing a repertoire of classic Christmas carols.
“I practiced a dozen times. Upon arriving here, I was greatly touched by the lights,” said Giuliana Gazel, one of the singers, who is only five years of age.
They were followed by a group of actors and dancers who put on a Christmas show with Costa Rican flair, as they retold the story of the birth of Jesus, but in a typical Costa Rican neighborhood. It highlighted the importance of solidarity.
Upon the birth of the Child, the actors and the public called for the illumination of the Children’s Museum, while Maria Jose Castillo went on stage to sing the song Mas allá (Beyond,) by Gloria Estefan. At the end of the festivities, there were 15 minutes worth of fireworks.
