My '69 Chevelle | | In the late 70's, when I lived in New York, I was given a '69 Chevelle with the 427 in it. Known as COPO Chevelles, these Chevelle's were specially ordered from the factory by certain dealers or well- connected customers with standard L72 427 V8s rated at 425bhp. An estimated 323 Chevelle COPO 427s were built, all of which were often devoid of badges or other indications of the power that resided underneath. The 396 said SS on it and had all the badges, but the 427 was the demon. I had one and traded it in 1980 for a 1978 Datsun 280Z; talk about not knowing what the future might hold. I have seen them go at auctions recently for over 100,000 dollars and one went for close to 1 million bucks! | |
